Glycol Supplier in Umm Al Quwain: MEG, DEG, Propylene Glycol and TEG Explained

Glycols are among the most widely used industrial liquids in the UAE. They keep chillers and engines from corroding or freezing, carry heat in process cooling, dry natural gas, soften plastics and go into foods, cosmetics and medicines. For buyers in Umm Al Quwain the question is rarely "do I need glycol" but "which glycol, at what grade, and in what concentration". This guide answers that.

The four glycols most buyers ask for

GlycolMain usesToxicity
Mono ethylene glycol (MEG)Coolant and antifreeze, heat transfer fluid, polyester resin and PET raw material, de-icingHarmful if swallowed
Diethylene glycol (DEG)Resins, plasticisers, solvent and humectant in technical productsHarmful if swallowed; never for food or medicine
Triethylene glycol (TEG)Natural gas dehydration, humidity controlLow acute toxicity
Propylene glycol (PG)Food, pharma and cosmetics, safer heat transfer fluidLow toxicity; food and USP grades exist

MEG: the industrial default

Mono ethylene glycol is the most common glycol in the region, because it moves heat very well and is cost effective. Mixed with water it lowers the freezing point and raises the boiling point, and good inhibited grades also protect metals from corrosion. A solution of about 50 percent MEG in water freezes at roughly -37 C, though most UAE systems need far less than that. Its drawback is toxicity: it is poisonous if swallowed and has a sweet taste, so it must be labelled, locked away and never used where a leak could reach food or drinking water. See our mono ethylene glycol and ethylene glycol listings.

Propylene glycol: when safety comes first

Propylene glycol is the choice for food plants, bakeries, dairies, cold stores that handle food, and any system where a leak might touch product. It has low toxicity and comes in food and USP grades, which are also used in cosmetics, flavours and pharmaceuticals. It is thicker than MEG at low temperatures and usually costs more, so it takes a little more pumping energy and budget. Both the industrial and the IP food grade propylene glycol are available.

TEG and DEG: specialist uses

TEG is mainly an oil and gas product, used to pull water out of natural gas streams. DEG appears in resin, plasticiser and technical formulations. If your process calls for either, tell us the application so we can confirm the grade, because technical DEG must never end up in a food or pharmaceutical product.

How much glycol does a system need?

In the UAE heat, most chillers and cooling circuits are not at risk of freezing. Glycol is added mainly for low-temperature process chillers, cold rooms and freezers, for corrosion protection, and for systems that run near or below zero. As a rough guide, a 25 to 30 percent glycol mix protects against freezing down to around -10 to -15 C. Always confirm the concentration against the equipment manufacturer's guidance and measure it with a refractometer or hydrometer. Too little glycol gives no protection, and too much reduces heat transfer.

Four mistakes to avoid

  1. Topping up with plain tap water. This dilutes the mix and the inhibitors. Use demineralised or treated water.
  2. Mixing different glycol types or brands without checking that the inhibitor packages are compatible.
  3. Never testing the fluid. Check concentration, pH and colour at least once a year. Dark, acidic fluid means the inhibitors are used up.
  4. Using industrial MEG where food contact is possible. Choose propylene glycol there.

Glycols for Umm Al Quwain customers

Fujairah Chemical stocks MEG, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol in drums and smaller packs at our Al Hayl Industrial Area base in Fujairah, and we can arrange delivery to Umm Al Quwain. Delivery timing and charges depend on the quantity, and we confirm both in the quotation. Tell us the application, grade and quantity and we will send a quotation with the safety data sheet. Frequently asked questions

Is MEG the same as antifreeze?

Antifreeze is mostly MEG with added corrosion inhibitors and dye. Pure MEG gives you control over the formulation, while ready-mixed coolant is simpler for vehicles.

Can I use food grade propylene glycol everywhere?

Yes, technically, but it costs more than MEG, so most industrial users keep it for places where safety matters.

What packs do you offer?

Packs range from small bottles to 210 litre drums. Ask us for current pack sizes.
