Salt Neutraliser is a clear aqueous solution designed to be applied directly to masonry, render or plaster that has been affected by ground water or efflorescing (white, fluffy) salts.

It is also recommended as part of treatment after the insertion of a damp proof course to existing masonry, which should include replastering to an approved specification.

How to use Salt Neutralizer for Plaster, Mansonry Construction work

  1. Brush away or remove all loose salts
  2. Thoroughly soak the affected area with clean tapwater
  3. Apply Salt Neutraliser by brush or roller to areas showing salts contamination. Under most circumstances one application will be sufficient. Where heavy salting on old brickwork (eg. chimney breasts) is being treated use Salt Neutraliser as supplied. On new plaster finishes or where the salting is light Salt Neutraliser can be diluted with water up to 50/50.
  4. Some frothing may occur which is due to the reaction of Salt Neutraliser with the salts and you should allow some time for the neutralizing action to be completed. A white deposit may be left on the surface where original efflorescence has taken place and this can be difficult to remove.
  5. If re-decoration is to be applied to the treated surface the area should be washed with water and allowed to dry. Do not re-decorate at any time until all treated areas are thoroughly dry.

Use directly onto old masonry, render or plaster, or dilute 50:50 with water to apply to new plaster suffering from efflorescence.

Reason for Salt formation in plaster, masonry work

As a result of rising dampness, salts contained in ground water are absorbed into the structural masonry of the building and subsequently into the internal plaster finishing coat. If the rising damp has been severe the plaster finish can de-bond and visual evidence of this potential problem can often be noted by the presence of salt deposits on the internal plaster surface. In such severe circumstances the plaster finish must be removed and re-plastering carried out in accordance with the appropriate specification, to prevent any residual salts in the structural masonry migrating into new plaster finishes. There are, however many situations where the type of salts within the masonry are such that the plaster finish remains in good condition.

In these cases Salt Neutraliser can be used to neutralise the salts in the sound plaster finish thus saving considerable time and expense by not having to re-plaster these areas. There are many other occasions where, even after re-plastering, salts efflorescence can be seen on the new plaster finish. This often leads to a concern that the damp proof course has failed when, in fact, in the majority of cases the efflorescence is due to other factors such as drying out, plumbing or rainwater leaks, condensation or salts in construction materials or salty bricks. Under these circumstances Salt Neutraliser is an ideal product to treat the problem.

Skin:Contact with Concentrated Solutions may cause serious damage to the skin. Effects may include Redness, Pain, and Skin Burns. High Vapor Concentrations may cause skin Sensitization.

Eye Contact:Vapors are Irritating and May cause Damage to Eyes. Contact May cause Severe Burns and Permanent Eye Damage.

Chronic Exposure:Long-Term Exposure may cause Darkening of the skin. May cause Erosion of Teeth and Chronic Inflammation or the Nose, Throat, and Bronchial Tubes.

Aggravated by Exposure:Persons with Pre-Existing skin Disorders or Eye Problems, or Impaired Respiratory Function May be more Susceptible to the Effects to this Substance.

SKIN:

In case of contact, immediately flush skin with water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.

  EYES: Wash eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lids occasionally.

  INHALATION:

Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial
respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen 

  INGESTION: Give several glasses of milk or water. Vomiting may occur spontaneously, but DO NOT INDUCE! Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

Absorb spill with inert material, then place in a chemical waste container. Neutralize with a weak base. Ventilate area of Leak or Spill. Wear Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment as Specified in Section 8. Isolate Hazard Area. Keep Unnecessary and Unprotected Personnel from Entering. Contain and Recover Liquid when Possible. Absorb with an Inert Material (e.g., Vermiculite, Dry Sand, Earth), and place in a Chemical Waste Container. Do Not Use Combustible Materials, such as Saw Dust.

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from incompatible materials. Wash thoroughly after handling.
